ECO-ED:
In SENCON’s efforts to help create a more sustainable future for all of Hampton Roads’ citizens, our instructional efforts are not limited to professionals in or hoping to enter the building trades.
We see a great value in taking a grass-roots approach to speak directly to area homeowners and residents to help them understand some simple ways they can improve and protect our region’s amazing environment, while enhancing their personal lives as well.
SENCON’s Eco ED classes are designed with the lay person in mind and are generally structured as fun, inexpensive, convenient and informal classes that give participants a better understanding of how to improve their home’s energy efficiency and lead greener, more sustainable lives. Following are class offerings that SENCON periodically holds.

SENCON is also happy to set up meetings specifically for groups such as churches; homeowner’s associations; civic leagues; fraternal, educational and professional organizations and others or to present these topics at your next meeting. Call us or fill out the form to learn more.

Energy Audits
What is a Home Energy Audit (HEA)? Why would I need one? What will it tell me? Is it something that I can do myself? How much will it cost to have a professional perform one? What are the benefits?
These are all questions that we will answer in this short, but informative class. We will address all of these issues and help you see how a Home Performance Assessment (HPA) can improve your most valuable investment—your home.

SENCON is the leading Home Performance Contractor in Hampton Roads. We have 8+ years of combined experience evaluating homes in Hampton Roads and providing solutions to the clients that allow us the opportunity to serve them. We have helped families obtain the dream of not only owning their own home, but making it a more energy efficient, green home, through EEMs and know that sometimes the EEM program can make the difference in being able to afford the home or not.
God’s Green Earth
Are you interested in greening your place of worship, but do not know how to relay the message to your board or congregation? This session is designed to do just that. We have put together a presentation that is scientifically, financially and biblically sound in its argument for being a good steward of our planet and our resources. The message is relevant to the topics of global warming and climate change, but presented in lay terms so that the everyday congregant can relate to the message and share it with others.
We at SENCON believe that being good stewards of the environment is simply the right thing to do. Our instructor, also a pastor at a local church, helped create and develop this course and curriculum.

D-I-Y Weatherization
Weatherizing your home is one of the best ways to save money on energy costs and improve your home’s efficiency with minimal investment. Unfortunately, many people don’t know where to begin in their homes or even what is truly meant by weatherization. This course is designed to give students the understanding of what is meant by weatherization and what the most practical applications are.
This course covers the following areas:
- a crash course in building science
- the importance of health and safety as related to building science issues
- the benefits of home performance
- how to assess a home’s performance
- introduction to some diagnostic tools
- how to assess base energy loads
- appliances
- water reduction
- lighting
- how to assess heating and cooling energy loads
- duct leakage
- air sealing
- insulation
- equipment
While covering these topics we provide hands-on demonstrations and tips for how students can take the information out of the classroom and into their homes where they can make practical application of what they’ve learned. This gives them the opportunity to not only learn something, but go and apply it and start seeing the financial benefits that come with making these improvements on their own.
