Did you know heating your home in winter and cooling it in summer can account for as much as 45 percent or even more of your total energy costs in a year?

thermostatIt’s no surprise then that improving your home’s ability to regulate temperatures efficiently will not only keep you and your family more comfortable, but it will also make a huge impact on reducing utility bills and conserving precious energy.

A few small tips you can follow to reduce this amount include:

  • Lowering your thermostat a few degrees below your norm in the winter can surprisingly have a big impact on your bills. The average home will use about 3 percent less energy for every degree the thermostat is lowered.
  • In the summer, doing just the opposite provides the same results. Raise your thermostat when the weather turns hot to reduce the work your air conditioner has to perform.
  • Change air filters monthly. This will not only reduce the energy needed to operate your HVAC system, but will also reduce the amount of dust and allergens that circulate through your home.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. These units are more precise and allow you to set your home for maximum comfort when the family is in and operate at minimal levels when sleeping or not at home. Check with your local electric or gas utility as some are currently offering programs for their customers that will allow them to obtain a free thermostat.
