SENCON Certifies NAHB Bronze Home

In our last Topic of the Week, we noted how popular green homes were becoming among more discerning homebuyers and the attention received by three particular homes during this spring’s Homearama at Founders Pointe in Isle of Wight County, Va.

Those three were all Energy Star certified by SENCON, which will also be performing all of the green certifications for the energy efficient homes at the upcoming Homearama event this fall.

Of significant importance in the three Energy Star certified homes, however, is that one of them, built by Sasser Construction, also received Bronze Level certification from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center as part of the NAHB Green Building Program. It is believed that the home at 905 Founders Pointe Trail is the first NAHB Bronze home certified in the Hampton Roads area.

The NAHB Green Building Program certifies homes based on their Green Home Building Guidelines and the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard. There are three certification levels obtainable according to those guidelines and they are Bronze, Silver and Gold. For residential buildings, there is also an additional level of Emerald. Each level represents a step up in the level of total energy efficiency built into each home based on seven categories. A minimum number of points must be met in each category for the various certification levels.

Measurement categories include lot design, preparation and development; resource efficiency; energy efficiency; water efficiency; indoor environmental quality; and operation, maintenance and building owner education. Points are additionally awarded from any category where they exceed the required number for that level of certification.
