NAHB-THMOur NAHB Green Certification is based on the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard.

There are four levels available – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald. Each green level and certification addresses key green construction areas including – Lot and Site Development, Resource Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality and Homeowner Education.

The National Green Building Standard

Certification is available for most types of residential construction or development projects including new single-family homes, which includes detached single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes, tri-plexes and quad-plexes. Certification is also available for new multi-unit residential buildings, the residential portion of mixed-use buildings, additions to single-family homes that equal less than 75% of existing square footage, renovations of single-family or multi-unit buildings, renovations plus additions to single-family homes, renovations of pre-1980 residential buildings, renovations that change the use of non-residential buildings into residential uses, individual sections or phases of residential or mixed-use developments and entire residential or mixed-use land developments and subdivisions.

Building conversions can be certified using the Green Building Path but not the Green Remodel Path

The following cannot be Green Certified at this time: additions only (of any size) to existing multi-unit buildings, additions only greater than 75% of the original conditioned area of an existing single-family building that does not involve renovation of the original building and developments that do not contain any residential uses.

Understanding the NAHB Green Certification Process

SENCON provides the qualified individuals as required by the NAHB Green Building Program to implement the key components of the organization’s certifying process. Each project is certified according to the National Green Building Standard.

Charrette Meeting
A Preconstruction Orientation Meeting takes place in our office prior to construction. SENCON offers guidance to each participant regarding applicable standards, inspections and testing and their potential impact on eventual certification of the project.

Designer’s Report Review
The general contractor will score the project with the provided scoring tool and submit the NAHB “Designer’s Report” to SENCON. We will transfer information and points claimed from designer's report to the verification report spreadsheet.

Rough Inspections
A Pre-Drywall Inspection is then scheduled. This occurs after framing and installation of insulation and ductwork, but prior to sheetrock. At this stage, we confirm the rough inspections points claimed and level of certification targeted by the builder.

SENCON also offers a sampling protocol for multi-family buildings.

Modeling
SENCON performs the required energy modeling and test according to each project.

Final Inspections
The final inspection takes place when the project is completed.
